Since 1963, the Japanese receive a commemorative silver sake cup on becoming a 100 years old. Due to increasing numbers of citizens reaching a 100, the cup size was shrunk and the solid silver was replaced with a silver-plated nickel alloy saving the Japanese government $1 million annually.
